The Vision
A personal, interactive digital atlas built by Vance Ashworth — documenting a lifelong obsession with castles across the globe. Part travel platform, part heritage archive, part personal memoir rendered in data and design.
Castle Categories
Every castle is classified by its relationship to the journey:
Origin
Edinburgh Castle & Château de Chambord — the first two castles ever studied as a child. The emotional anchor of the whole project.
Memory
Sites of deep personal significance — including Cape Coast Castle and Elmina, tied to the Door of Return walk in 2009.
Royal
Monarchic and dynastic castle sites — seats of kings, emperors, and ruling houses across centuries.
Heritage
Ancestral and cultural sites — Hill of Tara, Slane Castle, Great Zimbabwe — where identity is carved into landscape.
Fortress
Military and defensive structures — built for war, resistance, and the protection of borders and beliefs.
The Goal
The Castle Hunting Atlas is a proof-of-concept for a larger creative universe. A personal archive — a monument to a childhood passion that became a life-defining lens on history, heritage, and diaspora identity. A heritage discovery platform — eventually expanding into destination guides, regional landing pages, and community-driven documentation. A creative portfolio centerpiece — demonstrating that design, storytelling, technology, and personal narrative can be fused into something singular.
